  Education Experts Call for Urgent Changes to BECE to Align with New Curriculum. Two prominent voices in Ghana's education sector are calling for an immediate review of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to ensure it aligns with the country’s standard-based curriculum. Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, former Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, and Dr. Peter Anti Partey, Executive Director of the Institute for Education Studies, have both expressed concerns about the current relevance of the BECE.  According to them, the examination still operates under a norm-referenced model, comparing students' performance to that of their peers, whereas the standard-based curriculum requires a criterion-referenced approach that evaluates learners against clearly defined learning outcomes. GES Issues Stern Warning to the General Public Over Fake Recruitment and Appointment Scams Circulating. The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a firm warning to the public in response to an increasing number of fake recruitment adverts and appointment letters being circulated online.  These scams are carefully crafted to appear legitimate and are aimed at misleading individuals who are eager to secure positions within the Service. These deceptive messages, often disguised as official announcements, falsely claim to offer employment opportunities within the Ghana Education Service. GES wishes to state categorically that it has not started any recruitment exercise. Nkwanta SHS closed down after tribal conflict led to killing of student. The Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the urgent closure of Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region after tribal tensions in the area erupted into violence, resulting in the tragic death of a student and injuries to two others.  The closure follows high-level consultations between education authorities, security officials, and regional leadership in response to the growing threat to lives on campus. The situation reached a breaking point when two female students were shot while on their way to school on Thursday, June 26. A day later, a male student was struck by a stray bullet inside his classroom during mock examinations and lost his life. These incidents have shocked the education community and raised alarm over the safety of schools located within conflict-prone areas. Education Minister Orders Immediate Sacking of Teachers Aiding Exam Malpractices. The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has issued a strong directive to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately sack any teacher involved in examination malpractices.  His call comes in response to mounting concerns over the declining integrity of national examinations, particularly the alarming involvement of some teachers in actively enabling students to engage in cheating. Speaking during the 25th anniversary celebration of the International Community School in the Ashanti Region, the Minister expressed serious concern over the increasing use of mobile phones during exams and the role some teachers play in facilitating these dishonest acts.  He described such behaviour as unacceptable and a clear violation of the trust placed in the teaching profession. The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has issued a public advisory warning the general public and financial sector stakeholders about several Money Transfer Operators (MTOs) conducting business in the country without proper authorisation. In a statement dated June 27, 2025, the Bank highlighted that these entities are operating outside the legal framework governing foreign exchange and remittance services in Ghana. The BoG has urged individuals, commercial banks, Dedicated Electronic Money Issuers (DEMIs), and Enhanced Payment Service Providers (EPSPs) to refrain from engaging in transactions with the unlicensed firms. 55,000 Students To Sit For Certificate II Exams June30-July 28 The Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) is set to conduct this year’s Certificate II Examinations from June 30 to July 28, 2025 .  Over 55,000 students across the country are scheduled to participate in the nationwide assessment aimed at strengthening Ghana’s technical and vocational education sector. The exams will be held in two phases. The core subjects will be written from June 30 to July 7, followed by a one-week break. Elective subjects will then be taken from July 14 to July 28. Adventist SHS student accidentally shot in the eye regains sight after successful surgery in UK Suzzy Adwoa Pinamang, a second-year student at Adventist Senior High School, is steadily recovering after undergoing a successful eye surgery in the United Kingdom .  The operation took place on June 2, 2025, at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital, one of the world’s leading institutions in eye care. Earlier this year, Suzzy sustained a severe eye injury from an accidental gunshot. Although Republic Day traditionally falls on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the President—using powers granted under Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601)—has moved the celebration to the following Friday. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs for all consumer groups, effective July 1, 2025 .  This adjustment comes after the Commission's routine quarterly review aimed at ensuring the sustainability of utility service provision. In a statement issued on June 25, PURC clarified that the review forms part of its Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism, which assesses critical economic indicators such as the exchange rate, inflation, natural gas prices, and the generation mix between hydro and thermal sources.
