Government Declares Friday, July 4 a Public Holiday Following New Amendments.

Friday, July 4 Announced as Public Holiday Under New Holiday Reforms

In a new directive from the Office of the President, Friday, July 4, 2025, has been declared a statutory public holiday.

This decision follows recent amendments to the country’s holiday laws aimed at improving how national holidays are observed.

Although Republic Day traditionally falls on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the President—using powers granted under Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601)—has moved the celebration to the following Friday. The move is in line with government’s plan to shift midweek holidays to Fridays and observe weekend holidays on Mondays.

This adjustment forms part of a broader reform approved by Parliament under the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The bill was passed with urgency after being presented by the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, on June 24, 2025. The changes are designed to eliminate disputes over certain dates and create a more structured holiday system.

Key Highlights of the New Holiday Arrangement.

Republic Day (July 1) is officially back on the calendar.

•Shaqq Day, a new public holiday for Muslims, will be observed the day after Eid-ul-Fitr.

•Founder’s Day is now set for September 21, with August 4 removed from the list of statutory holidays.

•Holidays falling on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays will now be observed on Fridays.

•If a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it will be marked on the following Monday.

According to Mr. Muntaka, the reorganization was based on national feedback and the government’s commitment to fairness and inclusivity. He emphasized that holidays such as New Year’s Day (January 1), Constitutional Day (January 7), Independence Day (March 6), Labour Day (May 1), and Christian holidays like Good Friday and Easter Monday remain unchanged.

Ghanaians are advised to take note of these new arrangements and observe the upcoming Friday, July 4 holiday accordingly.
