MTN Ghana users can’t purchase data and airtime on Jan 2, 2026 – Here is why

MTN Ghana has announced a brief interruption to some of its services as part of planned system maintenance scheduled for Friday, January 2, 2026.

According to the company, the maintenance exercise is aimed at preparing its billing and charging systems for the implementation of new VAT reform tariffs. This update is necessary to ensure that transactions align accurately with the revised tax structure once it takes effect.

MTN explained that the upgrade will take place between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m. During this period, customers will not be able to purchase data bundles or airtime across any channel.

The VAT reform is part of a broader government initiative to strengthen revenue mobilisation and review taxes on digital services. As a leading telecommunications provider, MTN noted that adjusting its systems ahead of time will help prevent billing errors that could arise if outdated tax rates remain active.

MTN apologised for any inconvenience the temporary disruption may cause and encouraged customers to purchase sufficient data and airtime before the scheduled maintenance window.

Subscribers are assured that all services will be fully restored immediately after the exercise is completed.
