Official GES 2025/2026 Second Term Calendar for Basic Schools — Full Breakdown of Key Dates and Activities
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released the approved second-term calendar for the 2025/2026 academic year for basic schools.
This calendar outlines reopening dates, instructional periods, public holidays, mid-term breaks, examinations, and vacation timelines, providing a clear framework for effective academic planning by school leaders, teachers, parents, and learners.
Reopening and Duration of the Second Term
Public basic schools are scheduled to reopen on Thursday, 8 January 2026, following the 7 January Constitution Day public holiday. A number of private schools, however, are expected to resume academic activities earlier, on Tuesday, 6 January 2026.
The second term will span twelve (12) weeks, within which structured teaching and learning will largely take place up to the ninth week. This period is particularly significant for final-year Junior High School learners preparing for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Mid-Term Break and Public Holidays
All basic schools will observe a mid-term break in the seventh week of the term. In addition, schools will close temporarily for the Independence Day celebrations, from Friday, 6 March to Monday, 9 March 2026, and resume academic work on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.
Military Open Day Tour
As part of the Independence Day activities, learners in basic and second-cycle institutions will participate in the Military Open Day Tour on Monday, 9 March 2026. This initiative offers students the opportunity to visit military installations within their regions, interact with personnel from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, and gain firsthand exposure to military life through demonstrations and educational engagements.
Revision, Examinations, and Term Closure
The eleventh week of the term has been designated for revision, coinciding with the tentative Eid ul-Fitr celebration. End-of-term examinations will commence in week twelve, after which schools will officially close.
The tentative closing date for the second term is Wednesday, 1 April 2026, with vacation beginning on Thursday, 2 April 2026.
BECE Preparation for Final-Year Learners
While most learners will vacate after the term ends, JHS 3 students will remain in school to intensify preparations for the 2026 BECE, which is scheduled to begin on 11 May 2026.
