GNAT condemns attack on teachers by candidates over poor WASSCE results.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has expressed its strong disapproval and condemnation of the violent attack on teachers by West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidates in Kade, Eastern Region.
The incident, which occurred after the release of the WASSCE results, was allegedly sparked by the candidates' claims that teachers had contributed to their failure by refusing to tolerate examination malpractice.
Thomas Tanko Musah, General Secretary of GNAT, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with Labour Affairs Correspondent, Daniel Opoku, emphasizing the imperative of prioritizing teacher safety. He advised educators to vacate premises if they feel their lives are at risk, citing relevant provisions in the Labour Law to support this stance. Musah also cautioned Janet Nabla, Presidential Candidate of the People's National Party (PNP), against making unsubstantiated allegations against teachers.
By speaking out, GNAT aims to safeguard the well-being, dignity, and respect of teachers, ensuring they can continue to work in a safe and supportive environment conducive to effective teaching and learning. The association's stance serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting educators from violence, intimidation, and unwarranted criticism.
GNAT's response highlights the need for stakeholders to address the underlying issues contributing to examination malpractice and the attendant consequences. The association has called on the government and other stakeholders to take concrete steps to address the root causes of examination malpractice, ensure teachers are protected and supported, and promote a culture of academic integrity and excellence.
The association believes that this will help create a conducive environment for teaching and learning, and ultimately improve the quality of education in Ghana. GNAT's stance is a call to action for all stakeholders to work together to address the challenges facing the education sector and ensure that teachers are valued and respected.
