The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially released the 2025/2026 academic calendar for all basic schools, including Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools. The calendar outlines key reopening dates, term durations in weeks, vacation periods, and major academic activities to guide effective planning for the new school year.
Academic Year Duration
The 2025/2026 academic year will begin on Tuesday, 2 September 2025, and end on Friday, 24 July 2026. The year is structured into three terms, each with a clearly defined number of instructional weeks.
First Term – 15 Weeks
- Reopening: Tuesday, 2 September 2025
- Mid-Term Break: Friday, 31 October to Monday, 3 November 2025
- Closing: Thursday, 18 December 2025
- Vacation: Friday, 19 December 2025 to Tuesday, 7 January 2026
The first term spans 15 weeks, allowing adequate instructional time before the end-of-year break.
Second Term – 12 Weeks
- Reopening: Wednesday, 8 January 2026
- Closing: Wednesday, 1 April 2026
- Vacation: Thursday, 2 April to Monday, 20 April 2026
The second term runs for 12 weeks, concluding with a short vacation before the final phase of the academic year.
Third Term – 13 Weeks
- Reopening: Tuesday, 21 April 2026
- Closing: Thursday, 23 July 2026
- End-of-Year Vacation: Begins Friday, 24 July 2026
The third term covers 13 weeks and brings the academic year to a close.
BECE Schedule
The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for Junior High School candidates is scheduled to take place from Monday, 4 May to Monday, 11 May 2026. Schools are expected to align their instructional plans to adequately prepare candidates ahead of this national examination.
Important Notes
GES has directed all basic schools to observe statutory public holidays within the academic year. In addition, the approved mid-term breaks are to be strictly followed to ensure uniformity across schools.
