Government Clarifies Rationale Behind the 9% Salary Increment.
The Finance Minister has provided a refined explanation addressing widespread concerns over the decision to maintain a 9% salary increment for public-sector workers in the 2026 fiscal year. His clarification was delivered during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, where he responded directly to public and labour-union reactions to the modest increment.
In the interview, the minister explained that the 9% salary increment is part of a broader budget strategy that includes the planned recruitment of about 10,000 new workers, mainly within the education and health sectors. He emphasized that government must balance salary improvements with workforce expansion and overall fiscal responsibility.
Despite this explanation, labour unions remain dissatisfied. They continue to highlight the large number of trained teachers and nurses who have completed their programmes but are still awaiting placement. For many unions, the combination of delayed postings and a relatively small salary increment deepens economic frustration among workers.
The minister further stressed that recruitment cannot be handled in isolation.
Expanding the workforce requires corresponding investments in schools, hospitals, and essential infrastructure to ensure that newly posted staff can operate effectively. He appealed for patience and assured workers that government is committed to a gradual and sustainable implementation approach.
For teachers, the minister’s remarks signal that while the 9% salary increment has been confirmed, broader issues such as postings, workload pressures, and general service conditions remain central to ongoing national discussions. Further engagements between government and labour representatives are expected as implementation continues.
