Education Minister Appeals for Two-Week Window to Resolve CETAG Strike.

Education Minister Appeals for Two-Week Window to Resolve CETAG Strike.

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has appealed to the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) to suspend its ongoing strike and allow government two weeks to address the association’s unresolved concerns.

The appeal followed a meeting between the Minister and the leadership of CETAG on Tuesday, November 25, aimed at finding a negotiated solution to the impasse.

Speaking to journalists after the engagement, the Minister indicated that the outstanding issues date back to 2022 but assured that government is prepared to take steps to resolve them within the proposed two-week window. He explained that he had formally requested the association to call off the strike as negotiations continue, noting that the final decision now rests with CETAG and its members.

He further acknowledged that parts of the dispute are linked to rulings made by the National Labour Commission in favour of CETAG, which have not been fully implemented by the state. According to him, discussions are ongoing to find practical ways to enforce the Commission’s declaration and awards, while government works to clear the outstanding obligations.

CETAG commenced a nationwide industrial action on Monday, November 24, after accusing government of failing to fully implement the arbitral award issued by the National Labour Commission on May 2, 2023. The strike has affected academic activities in all 46 public Colleges of Education across the country, disrupting the training of thousands of future teachers.

As engagements continue, key stakeholders within the education sector are urging both parties to reach a timely and peaceful resolution to minimise the disruption to academic work and restore normal teaching and learning in the Colleges of Education.
