CETAG Declares Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Allowances and Unfulfilled Government Commitments.
The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has directed its members across the country to withdraw their services effective Monday, 24th November 2025, in an indefinite nationwide strike.
This decision follows an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) held on 19th November 2025, citing the government's persistent failure to honour critical financial commitments owed to teacher educators.
The industrial action is in response to the government's continuous refusal to fully implement the National Labour Commission (NLC) arbitral award delivered on 2nd May 2023, aimed at resolving longstanding concerns of CETAG members.
The Association has outlined four key unresolved financial obligations prompting the strike. CETAG members in 39 Colleges of Education are yet to receive compensation for additional duties performed in 2022, with only Accra College of Education receiving partial payment.
The Book and Research Allowance for the 2023/2024 academic year remains outstanding, and arrears for the previous academic year (2022/2023) are also unsettled. Additionally, Akrokerri College of Education is particularly affected, with top-up arrears for the 2021/2022 academic year still unpaid.
CETAG maintains that the strike is a last resort, following repeated reminders, engagements, and negotiations that failed to yield results. The Association argues that the government's delays breach the NLC arbitral award and threaten the welfare, motivation, and professional stability of teacher educators nationwide.
The strike is expected to disrupt academic activities, including teaching, supervision, assessments, and administrative duties, across the 46 public Colleges of Education, potentially impacting the 2025/2026 academic calendar and worsening delays in teacher training.
Stakeholders are calling for urgent intervention to prevent further destabilization, and CETAG has stated that the strike will continue indefinitely until the government fully honours all outstanding financial commitments.
