We support Education Minister 100% – GNAT on ban on long hair in SHSs.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has endorsed the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, for his directive prohibiting students in senior high schools from keeping long hair.

The association believes the measure will help strengthen discipline and promote a focused learning environment.

Speaking on TV3’s NewsCentral with Keminni Amanor on October 27, GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah, stated that schools are institutions for academic and moral training, not social grounds for fashion or entertainment.

He emphasized that every student must comply with the rules that guide school life, adding, “We support the Minister of Education 100%. A school is not a party venue; it is a place for learning.

Mr. Musah explained that the directive goes beyond appearance, as it seeks to promote concentration, discipline, and holistic education, one that develops the mind, heart, and hand. He noted that discipline is the foundation upon which academic excellence and character formation are built.

The Minister’s directive, which has sparked debate over student hairstyles and dress codes, also reaffirms the Ghana Education Service’s authority to enforce discipline in schools.

Mr. Iddrisu warned that allowing indiscipline could weaken moral and academic standards. He further cautioned teachers against sexual misconduct, promising strict sanctions against offenders to safeguard the welfare of students.

During the 75th anniversary celebration of Mawuli Senior High School in Ho, the Minister commended the school for its contribution to nation-building and announced a new dormitory project to improve students’ living conditions.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting quality education, while GNAT’s endorsement highlighted the shared belief that discipline and focus are vital pillars for shaping responsible and productive citizens.
