Teachers and other workers at the Garu district office of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and surrounding areas were caught off guard when armed men stormed the premises on Monday morning, unleashing a hail of bullets that left four people dead and several others injured. 

The victims included a staff member of the NHIS, a headteacher, and a local chief. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many residents expressing fear and concern for their safety.

According to eyewitnesses, four armed men, clad in smocks, helmets, and face masks to conceal their identities, arrived at the NHIS office on two motorbikes and opened fire indiscriminately. The attack was sudden and unexpected, catching the staff and visitors off guard. Two individuals were killed on the spot, including the NHIS staff member, who was shot inside the office, and a man who was outside the premises.

The gunmen continued their shooting spree, targeting bystanders and fleeing residents. The headteacher of the Garu G/A Primary School, who was nearby, was also killed in the attack. The local chief, who was reportedly heading to the market, was shot and killed by the gunmen.

The attackers fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of fear and panic. The sound of gunshots echoed through the town, sending shockwaves among the residents. Security has been tightened in Garu, with heavily armed police and military personnel patrolling key areas, including the District Health Insurance Office and the Presbyterian Hospital.

The authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the motive behind the attack. The investigation aims to identify the perpetrators and determine the cause of the attack. Residents have called for calm and urged the authorities to enhance security presence and bring the perpetrators to justice. The incident has left the town in shock, with many expressing fear and concern for their safety.

The NHIS office has been closed until further notice, and counseling services are being provided to those affected by the attack. The government has condemned the attack and assured the public that everything is being done to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent such incidents in the future.
