TEWU Suspends Nationwide Strike
The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) has suspended its indefinite nationwide strike, which started on September 19, 2025.
The suspension took effect on October 1 after what the union described as constructive discussions with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and other employer institutions. In a statement signed by General Secretary, King James Azortibah, TEWU said the talks created a pathway for resolving long-standing demands, particularly the conclusion and signing of new Conditions of Service for members.
The union explained that the suspension is not the end of its concerns but a strategic pause to allow further negotiations and implementation of agreed terms. Members across the Ghana Education Service, public and technical universities, the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and the Ghana Library Authority have been directed to resume work immediately. However, those who travelled outside their duty stations during the strike have until October 6 to return.
A follow-up meeting has been scheduled with the FWSC on October 7 to continue negotiations and finalise pending agreements. TEWU also cautioned against any form of victimisation of its members for participating in the strike, stressing its commitment to defend anyone treated unfairly.
The union described the strike as impactful, noting the involvement of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Jobs, the National Labour Commission, and the FWSC in the resolution process. It also commended its National Executive Council, regional leaders, and grassroots members for their solidarity and resilience, stating that the action had once again proven the strength of collective unity.
