TEWU Pushes for 50% Base Pay Increment Ahead of Forthcoming Salary Negotiations
TEWU Seeks 50% Base Pay Increment Ahead of Forthcoming Salary Negotiations
TheTeachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) under the Trade Union Congress (TUC-Ghana) has demanded a 50% increase in base salaries ahead of forthcoming negotiations with the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.
Speaking on Joy News on Thursday, October 9, TEWU National Chairperson Salamatu Mahamah Braimah highlighted that rising living costs require urgent adjustments to workers’ pay. She emphasized that fair compensation should reflect changes in the economic environment.
“We are selling our labour, and as you know, each time things change, it means that our working conditions must change as well. We are going into these negotiations expecting an improvement in the base pay. The minimum we are asking for is 50%. Even if the government offers 100%, we will accept and move forward,” Braimah said.
Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, acknowledged the union’s concerns and assured that the government will carefully review the proposal. He noted that any agreement will consider both the welfare of workers and the state’s financial capacity.
The upcoming discussions are poised to be a significant step in addressing salary concerns and improving the working conditions of teachers and educational staff nationwide.
