Haruna Iddrisu slams GNAT President for advising teachers to pursue female colleagues.
Education Minister Vehemently Condemns GNAT President’s Comments on Teacher–Student Relationships
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has strongly condemned the recent comments made by the President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Reverend Isaac Owusu, who advised male teachers to avoid sexual relationships with students and rather develop romantic ties with their female colleagues.
Speaking during the commissioning of the Dr. Leonard Kaledzi Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence Education at Anloga on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, Mr. Iddrisu described the remarks as inappropriate and tantamount to sexual harassment. He maintained that such comments have no place in a professional environment and undermine ongoing efforts to uphold ethics, discipline, and learner protection in schools.
The Minister stressed that the teaching profession demands the highest standards of conduct, integrity, and discipline. He cautioned that any teacher found engaging in unprofessional or compromising conduct with students would face decisive sanctions. Mr. Iddrisu further warned that even encouraging romantic involvement among colleagues, as suggested by Reverend Owusu, could breach the teaching code of conduct and constitute sexual harassment.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to discipline and ethics, he emphasized that the Ministry of Education will not tolerate any behaviour that taints the image of the profession or erodes public trust in teachers. “I am reminding him that even that will constitute sexual harassment as it goes against the teaching code of conduct,” Mr. Iddrisu remarked. He reiterated that teachers must remain models of moral responsibility and respect within the school environment.
Mr. Iddrisu assured that the Ministry remains unwavering in its mission to safeguard both students and teachers while maintaining ethical integrity across educational institutions. He warned that any act of misconduct or unprofessional behaviour would be met with strict disciplinary measures as outlined in the established regulations.
