Government to reclassify some SHSs to ease pressure on category A schools.

Education Minister announces plan to downgrade 10 Category A schools, upgrade 10 Category B schools to ease placement pressure.

The Ministry of Education is set to implement a major reform aimed at addressing the growing imbalance in the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced that government will soon reclassify some senior high schools to promote fairness and ease congestion in the most sought-after institutions.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, 14 October 2025, the Minister disclosed that ten Category A schools will be downgraded to Category B, while another ten Category B schools will be upgraded to Category A. He explained that the reclassification would be accompanied by major infrastructure investments to ensure that the upgraded schools meet the required standards for Category A institutions.

Mr. Iddrisu noted that the current placement system has led to intense competition for limited spaces in a few elite schools. “With about 393,000 students competing for just 76,000 spaces in our top schools, maintaining fairness and transparency in the placement process has become a challenge,” he said.

The Minister emphasized that the move is designed to distribute opportunities more equitably across the country. According to him, the government will expand facilities such as classroom blocks, dormitories, and science laboratories in selected schools to make them more attractive to students and parents.

He further highlighted that some regions — including North East, Savannah, Oti, and Western North — currently have no Category A schools. As part of the reclassification, the Ministry plans to prioritize infrastructure development in these areas to bridge regional gaps in access to quality secondary education.

“This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to make the CSSPS more transparent, balanced, and efficient for every student,” Mr. Iddrisu added.

The Ministry of Education is expected to publish the list of schools affected and the timeline for implementation after ongoing stakeholder consultations are completed.
