Employment Minister Reveals Root Cause of Salary Delays Affecting Teachers.

The Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, has shed light on the root cause of the ongoing salary delays affecting thousands of nurses, teachers, and junior doctors.

According to him, the problem originated from poor recruitment practices and weak financial management under the previous administration. He explained that over 12,000 people were employed into the public sector without financial clearance, making it difficult for the government to process their payments. The transitional budget handed over to the Mahama administration also failed to include funds to cater for these new recruits, worsening the financial strain.

Speaking at the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, where he described the situation as unfortunate but assured that government is working diligently to resolve it. Dr. Pelpuo noted that the ministry is taking steps to ensure that all affected workers receive their salaries before the end of the year. He also urged nurses, teachers, and junior doctors to remain calm as the government takes concrete measures to address the arrears.

He further emphasized that proper recruitment procedures and fiscal discipline will be enforced going forward to prevent similar challenges. The Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to fairness and efficiency in the public sector, stressing that future recruitments will be handled with transparency and accountability to restore public confidence.
