Withdrawal of “Our World and Our People” from Primary School Curriculum.
The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has announced that Our World and Our People (OWOP) will no longer exist as a standalone subject in Ghana’s primary school curriculum. This decision follows a meeting held on June 13, 2024, between NaCCA, the Parliament’s Select Committee on Education, and the Ghana Publishers Association (GPA), after which a formal notice was issued on June 28, 2024.
Under the new directive, OWOP is being phased out beginning with the 2024/2025 academic year. From this period onward, it will no longer be taught as a separate subject.
Instead, its themes and content will be absorbed into other related subject areas. Moving forward, starting from the 2025/2026 academic year, OWOP will only be used as a supplementary reader within the school system.
NaCCA explained that the withdrawal forms part of a broader curriculum review aimed at streamlining learning areas, reducing overlaps, and ensuring greater efficiency in teaching and learning.
The Council assured that it is committed to working collaboratively with the Ghana Publishers Association, particularly in matters of textbook development, to ensure that the new approach meets the needs of teachers and pupils.
The notice has also been communicated to major stakeholders, including the Minister of Education, the Select Committee on Education in Parliament, and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
NaCCA emphasized that the review process is being carried out with a strong focus on consultation and inclusivity, to ensure that the curriculum remains relevant, practical, and beneficial to learners.
This change marks an important shift in how content related to society, culture, and citizenship will be delivered at the basic school level, signaling NaCCA’s efforts to refine Ghana’s educational system for improved learning outcomes.
