TUC urges calm as preparations begin for new minimum wage negotiations.

TUC Urges Workers to Stay Calm as National Minimum Wage Negotiations Begin.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is encouraging workers to remain calm as Organised Labour prepares to enter discussions with government on the new national minimum wage and base pay adjustments.

These negotiations, scheduled to shape salaries from 2026 onward, are seen as a critical step in safeguarding the welfare of workers across the country.

TUC Secretary-General, Joshua Ansah, explained in an interview that a technical committee has been constituted to review major economic indicators such as inflation, cost of living, and other macroeconomic trends. The committee’s findings will inform the deliberations of the National Tripartite Committee when the official negotiations begin.

Mr. Ansah noted that in previous negotiations, Organised Labour raised concerns about the current formula used to determine both the minimum wage and the base pay. He argued that relying solely on inflation rates puts workers at a disadvantage since it fails to capture the real cost of living. The new approach under consideration is expected to reflect a broader and fairer measure of economic conditions.

“The technical team has already begun its work and will soon submit a report to the Tripartite Committee, after which the main negotiations will start,” Mr. Ansah stated. He further clarified that the new minimum wage under discussion will apply to 2026, not 2025, stressing that it is better to complete the process carefully rather than hastily.

Organised Labour has also pledged to demand a stronger upward adjustment than the 10 percent increment approved for 2025. With economic pressures continuing to erode household incomes, unions are determined to push for a wage agreement that adequately reflects the needs of workers.

The forthcoming negotiations are therefore expected to be decisive, as they will directly impact salaries, industrial peace, and the broader labour market in the years ahead.
