Over 107,000 BECE candidates to undertake self-placement – Education Ministry Explains.
Education Ministry Explains Self-Placement for Over 107,000 BECE Candidates.
The Ministry of Education has shed light on the 2025 school placement exercise, revealing that more than 107,000 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates will need to complete their admissions through the self-placement system.Placement Outcome for 2025
A total of 603,328 candidates sat for the BECE this year. Out of this number, 590,309 qualified for placement into Senior High Schools (SHSs), Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs), and Technical and Vocational Institutions (TVIs).
•483,800 candidates (82%) were automatically placed according to their performance, school choices, and availability of vacancies.
•107,509 candidates (18%) were not matched automatically and will therefore make their own school selections using the self-placement portal.
Why Self-Placement is Necessary
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, explained that demand for certain schools far exceeded their capacity. He emphasized that while some students could not be assigned to their preferred institutions, the self-placement option guarantees that every qualified candidate secures a school.
More Options for Candidates
For the first time, the Ministry has widened placement opportunities to include private Senior High Schools under the Free SHS programme. The number of approved private schools has now increased from 21 during the initial selection to 70 schools, all available on the portal.
This expansion means candidates can now choose from:
•724 public SHSs and SHTSs
•233 TVIs
•70 approved private SHSs
This move is expected to reduce pressure on public schools while creating more opportunities for students.
Support Systems and Safeguards
To help resolve placement challenges, the Ministry has established resolution centres nationwide. The main centre is located at GNAT Hall in Accra, with operations running daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
The Ministry also stressed that the placement process is completely free. Parents and guardians are advised not to engage individuals or groups who demand money to influence placements. Security agencies will collaborate with the Ministry to deal with such cases.
In summary, while the majority of candidates have already secured automatic placements, the self-placement system offers another pathway for more than 107,000 students. With expanded school options and dedicated support services, the Ministry is assuring families of a transparent and accessible process.
