GES Introduces New Literature Text for BECE English Paper (2027–2031)

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the introduction of a new literature text for the English Language paper of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which will take effect from 2027 to 2031.

In a circular dated April 7, 2025, and signed by Prince Charles Agyemang-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division, the Service explained that the decision was informed by the full implementation of the Standard-Based Curriculum in Junior High Schools (JHS).

The new text, The Beacon of Light, jointly published by Excellence and Elco Publications, has been reviewed and approved by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA). According to NaCCA, the book is well-aligned with the Standard-Based Curriculum and strongly reflects Ghanaian values, making it suitable for both teaching and learning at the JHS level.

This marks the end of the use of The Cock Crow, which has served as the main literature text for more than a decade. The Service noted that its prolonged use led to the recycling of examination questions, while parts of its content had become outdated and inconsistent with current curriculum requirements.

Regional Directors of Education have been directed to inform Metro, Municipal, and District Directors of Education, who will in turn communicate the directive to heads of JHS, teachers, and learners. Schools are expected to make the necessary arrangements to transition to the new book before its official use in the 2027 BECE.

The introduction of The Beacon of Light forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at modernizing teaching and learning materials to reflect national values and better prepare students to meet the evolving demands of education.
