Ministry of Education Announces New Measures to Strengthen Colleges of Education.

The Ministry of Education has announced a set of initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, governance, and institutional development across the nation’s 48 public Colleges of Education.

At a ceremony in Sunyani to inaugurate seven newly constituted governing councils, Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, emphasized the government’s commitment to revitalizing teacher-training institutions.

He noted that the total number of public Colleges of Education now stands at 48, including three recently integrated schools: the Savanna College of Education, the Ghana Muslim Mission College at Beposo, and Christ the Teacher College at Nsoko. The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has been tasked to complete the full absorption process for these colleges into the public system.

A major concern raised was the lack of adequate hostel facilities. In 2023, the Ministry began constructing hostels across 46 Colleges of Education. While nine projects are near completion and eleven are progressing steadily, twenty-five have stalled. As a corrective measure, the Ministry has canceled contracts for the stalled projects and intends to re-award them.

To facilitate this, GHS 403 million from the GETFund has been allocated to ensure timely completion and to ease pressure on student accommodation.

The Minister also explained that all 48 Colleges of Education are currently transitioning into universities, a process that requires amendments to the Act that established them.

GTEC, in collaboration with the Attorney General’s Department, is working to prepare the necessary legal framework, which is expected to be presented to Parliament during its next sitting. Until then, governing councils have been urged to consult GTEC before making major decisions, particularly on appointments and institutional restructuring.

Looking ahead, about 20 principals across various colleges are expected to retire or complete their terms within the coming year. The Minister called for governing councils to work closely with GTEC to ensure a smooth and transparent selection process for new leadership.

He concluded by reaffirming the Ministry’s dedication to strengthening the tertiary education system and ensuring that Colleges of Education are equipped to provide high-quality teacher training for the future.
