GTEC Directs Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah to Stop Using “Professor” Title

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has officially instructed Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah to desist from presenting herself as a professor, stating that her records do not support that title.

This decision follows the Commission’s assessment of documents provided by her representatives concerning her academic background.

According to GTEC, Dr. Ayensu-Danquah’s claim of being an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Utah was inaccurate. The university clarified that her role was specifically Adjunct Assistant Professor, a part-time, non-tenure track appointment. Within Ghana’s academic structure, GTEC explained, this position is equivalent to the rank of Lecturer, not Senior Lecturer or Professor. The Commission further stressed that omitting the term “Adjunct” misrepresents her true academic standing.

GTEC revealed that Dr. Ayensu-Danquah was given until August 11 to present verifiable evidence of a professorial appointment but failed to do so. Consequently, the Commission has directed her employers to ensure she no longer uses the professor title, warning that any disregard for this directive could trigger legal action.

This case, GTEC emphasized, reflects the importance of protecting academic integrity and ensuring that titles are used appropriately. For the Commission, maintaining strict adherence to academic ranks is vital to upholding trust, credibility, and professionalism in the country’s higher education sector.
