Zuarungu SHS closed after tribal violence between students escalate.Authorities have temporarily closed Zuarungu Senior High School in the Upper East Region following violent clashes between students from the Kusaasi and Frafra ethnic groups.
The conflict, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 20, led to significant property damage on campus and in the surrounding community.
Reports from school staff indicate that the disturbances began on school grounds and later spread beyond the campus. Students reportedly vandalised the school’s market area before moving into the nearby Abintinbot market, where several shops sustained damage.
Fire personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were called to the scene at approximately 3:52 a.m. to put out fires that broke out during the incident. A teacher residing on the school compound confirmed the presence of flames and extensive destruction.
In response to the escalating tension, the Upper East Regional Minister directed the immediate closure of the school to ensure the safety of students and staff while security agencies work to restore calm. An assessment is currently underway to determine the full extent of the damage.
The situation remains under investigation, and regional authorities are engaging local stakeholders to address the root causes of the conflict and prevent further incidents.
