Refund of WASSCE Practical Fees Collected from Students–GES Orders

GES Orders Immediate Refund of WASSCE Practical Fees Collected from Students.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a directive instructing all Regional Directors to ensure the immediate refund of monies collected from students and parents for the 2025 WASSCE practicals

This follows the government's release of full funding to cover the cost of these examinations, including all required materials and resources.

Government Funding Rendered Charges Unnecessary

According to the official letter signed by Prof. Smile Dzisi, Acting Deputy Director-General (Management Services), the government has already provided complete financial support for the practical aspects of the 2025 WASSCE. This makes any monetary demands from candidates, parents, or guardians for the same purpose both unnecessary and inappropriate.

However, it has come to the attention of the GES that some school heads have nonetheless collected fees from students in connection with the practicals. The service has expressed concern over this development and taken steps to correct the situation.

Directives to School Heads

GES has outlined the following directives to school heads found to have collected such monies:

1.) Immediate Refund: All monies collected from students or parents for WASSCE practicals must be refunded without delay.

2.) Proper Documentation: The refund process must be thoroughly documented, with official receipts issued to confirm repayment.

3.) Reporting: Heads must notify their Regional Directors once the refunds have been completed.

Sanctions for Non-compliance

GES emphasized that failure to comply with these directives constitutes a serious breach of official instructions and may result in administrative sanctions. The service stressed that adherence to this directive is crucial in reducing the financial burden on families and ensuring that no student is excluded from participation due to financial constraints.

Call to Regional Directors

Regional Directors have been tasked with communicating this directive to all heads of schools under their jurisdiction, through their respective Municipal, Metro, or District Directors of Education.

This firm step by the GES aims to protect students’ rights and uphold equitable access to education as the nation prepares for the 2025 WASSCE.
