GTEC Officials Arrests Director of Nyarkotey University for Running Unaccredited Programmes.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has taken decisive action against Nyarkotey University College of Holistic Medicine and Technology in Ashaiman, Greater Accra Region, following the discovery that the institution was operating unaccredited academic programmes and an unlicensed health facility.

On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, GTEC officials, in collaboration with personnel from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, visited the university campus. During the operation, Dr. Ademan Tetteh, one of the three directors and reportedly in charge of the day’s operations, was arrested for further interrogation. The other two directors, Daniel Tetteh Boafo and Professor Nyarkotey Obu, were not present at the time.

Efforts to verify the institution's accreditation status were unsuccessful, prompting law enforcement officers to detain Dr. Tetteh along with the Registrar of the institution. Both individuals were subsequently taken to the CID Headquarters for further investigation.

Additionally, it emerged during preliminary questioning that Dr. Tetteh was allegedly using a doctorate title he did not academically earn. He later claimed it was an honorary title bestowed upon him.

Speaking to the media after the arrests, Mr. Jerry Sarfo, Director for Corporate Affairs at GTEC, emphasized that the Commission’s action was part of an ongoing effort to ensure compliance with national tertiary education standards.

“This enforcement is necessary. We have consistently cautioned individuals and institutions against running unaccredited programmes, but some continue to disregard these warnings,” Mr. Sarfo said. “We are here today because the university is operating without accreditation, which is a serious breach of regulatory requirements.”

He further noted that GTEC would investigate claims of honorary titles and professorships being used by the institution’s management. “We’ve observed the use of certain academic titles. We need to assess their legitimacy before drawing any conclusions,” he added.

GTEC has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of tertiary education in the country and has urged all private institutions to comply strictly with accreditation standards.
