Government Clears Capitation Grant Arrears for Basic Schools from 2023 to Date.
In a move aimed at boosting the effective management of basic education, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that the Government of Ghana has fully settled all arrears of the Capitation Grant owed to basic schools from 2023 to date.According to a press release signed by the Head of Public Relations at GES, Mr. Daniel Fenyi, this payment underscores the government’s strong commitment to supporting quality education delivery, especially at the foundational level. The Capitation Grant, which is central to the administration of public basic schools, is used for the procurement of teaching and learning materials, minor repairs, and other essential school-based management activities.
The arrears cleared span the period beginning 2023 to the present year, 2025. GES indicated that this financial intervention will significantly support school heads in managing their schools more effectively. Timely release of the grant, it added, ensures schools can operate with greater autonomy and accountability.
The GES management expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance for prioritizing this payment, particularly amid current economic pressures. They also acknowledged the patience and continuous dedication of heads of basic schools in maintaining teaching and learning activities during the delay in funding.
School leaders have been urged to ensure that the funds are used responsibly and in accordance with established guidelines. GES also announced that monitoring teams at the district and regional levels will be tasked with ensuring the proper use of the grant and delivering value for money.
The Service reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders to strengthen school management systems and improve learning outcomes. It emphasized the goal of delivering inclusive, equitable, and quality education for every child in the country.
This development comes as a major relief to school heads, parents, and education stakeholders who have long awaited the release of the grant to facilitate smooth school operations.
