GNAT Urges GES to Establish More Centres for Teacher Promotion Exams

 

GNAT Calls on GES to Create Additional Centres for Promotion Exams

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has officially called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to establish more aptitude test centres across the country to support teacher promotions. 

The request comes in response to growing concerns about the accessibility and cost of attending existing centres, particularly for teachers stationed in distant or underserved areas.

The appeal was made through a letter dated July 2, 2025, and signed by Mr. Amadu Moses Baman Snr., Deputy General Secretary in charge of Education and Professional Development. GNAT is seeking urgent intervention to reduce the burden placed on its members during the promotion examination process.

Concerns Raised by Teachers

In the letter, GNAT outlined two key concerns frequently raised by teachers:

Long travel distances: Many teachers have to travel across multiple districts or regions to access designated centres, often under stressful and unsafe conditions.

High personal costs: The cost of transportation, meals, and lodging continues to weigh heavily on teachers, especially those from low-income backgrounds or rural locations.

According to GNAT, these barriers discourage participation and create inequality in access to career advancement opportunities.

Areas Proposed for New Centres

To address these challenges, GNAT has proposed that new aptitude test centres be established in the following regions and enclaves:

•Savannah Region

•Asunafo Enclave – Bono Ahafo Region

•Birim Enclave – Eastern Region

•Afram Plains Enclave – Eastern Region

•Twifo Enclave – Central Region

•Nzema Enclave – Western Region

•Tarkwa Enclave – Western Region

•Bunkpurugu Enclave – North East Region

These areas were identified based on reports from teachers who consistently face difficulties reaching existing centres.

GNAT is optimistic that the GES will respond positively and act promptly to make the promotion process more accessible and equitable. Copies of the letter were also shared with GNAT National Officers and the Deputy General Secretary for Administration and Labour Relations.

This request reaffirms GNAT’s commitment to championing teacher welfare and ensuring equal access to professional development opportunities across the education sector.
