GES Warns Head Teachers Not to Charge Students for WAEC Certificates.

WAEC certificate collection is free — GES warns head teachers against illegal fees.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has reiterated that students should not be charged any fees when collecting their West African Examinations Council (WAEC) certificates.

This reminder follows the circulation of a video in which a headmaster is seen allegedly demanding GH₵200 from former students as a condition for releasing their certificates, even threatening legal consequences for those who refused to pay.

Speaking on Nyansapo, a current affairs programme on Otec FM, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of GES, Mr. Henry Osei Boateng, firmly stated that WAEC certificates are not items for sale. He explained that the cost of these certificates is already absorbed in the registration fees paid prior to the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), and therefore, no additional payment should be required at the time of collection.

Mr. Boateng made it clear that schools are strictly prohibited from charging students for their certificates, and any such practice constitutes a breach of GES regulations. However, he acknowledged that schools may legitimately seek to recover unpaid levies or outstanding dues unrelated to the certificate. Even so, these should never be used as leverage to withhold a student's certificate.

He cautioned that any school head found demanding money before releasing WAEC certificates risks facing disciplinary action, including possible referral to the GES Disciplinary Committee. Mr. Boateng further encouraged affected students and parents to promptly report such incidents, assuring them that GES is prepared to act decisively against offenders.

This directive reaffirms GES’s commitment to protecting students' rights and ensuring that no graduate is denied access to their academic credentials due to arbitrary or unauthorized financial demands. By insisting on transparency and compliance, the Service seeks to remove unnecessary financial barriers and uphold integrity within the education system.
