GES Temporarily Closes Violence-Affected Schools to Safeguard Lives and Learning.
Following the recent spate of violent incidents at Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS, the Ghana Education Service has instituted comprehensive emergency safety measures to ensure the protection and well-being of students, staff, and school property. These incidents, which occurred between July 20 and 26, 2025, resulted in the tragic loss of student lives, injuries, and significant damage to school facilities. The GES has strongly condemned the acts of violence and emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone in the affected communities.
The Service has expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and extended support to all those impacted. In light of the prevailing threats, it has officially announced the temporary closure of all affected schools as a precautionary measure to safeguard lives and property while further assessments are conducted.
Efforts are currently underway, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, WAEC, Regional and District Directors, and school authorities, to ensure that SHS 3 students in the affected schools can write their WASSCE under secure and fair conditions. Plans are being discussed to provide special examination centres where candidates can sit for their exams without disruption.
Meanwhile, arrangements are being considered to support SHS 1 and 2 students through alternative learning avenues while campuses remain closed. Details of these academic continuity plans will be communicated in due time. The GES has also taken steps to provide strengthened counselling support for students and staff to help them recover from the psychological impact of the recent events.
The swift evacuation of students from affected schools was made possible through the support of the Ministry of Interior and security agencies. The GES acknowledged these efforts and reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with all stakeholders to reinforce safety protocols on school campuses.
The Service is calling on parents, community leaders, and law enforcement bodies to join hands in maintaining peace, discipline, and the integrity of education in the country. GES remains resolute in its efforts to protect both academic progress and human lives during this challenging period.
