Education Minister Calls for One Last GTLE Resit as Reforms Continue

Education Minister Seeks Final Opportunity for GTLE Resit as Reforms Progress

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the National Teaching Council (NTC) to offer a final resit opportunity to teacher trainees who are yet to pass the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE).

His appeal came during a monitoring visit to the ongoing examination centre at Accra High School, where he interacted with officials and candidates.

According to the Minister, over 37,000 candidates are sitting for the current GTLE, including about 5,000 resit candidates. The majority, roughly 32,000, are first-time candidates who completed their training before the current administration assumed office. He described this cohort as deserving of another opportunity and expressed confidence that the NTC would respond accordingly before the end of August, as previously communicated.

He reiterated the government’s strong commitment to improving teacher quality and professionalism across the education sector. Emphasizing that continuous professional development is part of the collective bargaining agreement with teachers, he stated that licensure must be viewed not merely as an exam but as a professional benchmark that strengthens the teaching profession.

Minister Iddrisu also acknowledged the psychological and emotional challenges many candidates face. He urged for compassion and support, noting that some of the most intelligent individuals can struggle under exam conditions due to anxiety or lack of emotional readiness. His message was clear: encouragement, not condemnation, is what these candidates need.

The request for a final resit aligns with the government’s broader plan to reform the teacher licensure system. Plans are already underway to phase out the standalone GTLE and integrate it into the final academic assessments at Colleges of Education and universities. This shift is expected to create a more streamlined and academically grounded approach to teacher qualification.

The Education Minister’s remarks underscore the government’s intention to ensure fairness during this transition period while laying the foundation for a more efficient and inclusive teacher licensing process in the years ahead.
