Seven Lawra SHS Students Feared Dead After Boat Capsizes on Black Volta.

A tragic incident has deeply affected the Lawra Senior High School community in the Upper West Region, where seven students are feared dead after a boat capsized on the Black Volta River near Dikpe. 

The accident occurred during what was meant to be a routine morning jogging exercise.

Reports indicate that ten students had gathered for their morning exercise along the riverbank. On a sudden decision, they attempted to cross the Black Volta River into neighbouring Burkina Faso using a boat. Unfortunately, the boat overturned mid-journey, throwing all ten students into the river.

Rescue operations have successfully retrieved three students who survived the accident. However, seven students remain missing, and their whereabouts are still unknown. Local authorities, security personnel, and divers have launched a joint search and rescue mission, but the strong currents of the Black Volta have posed significant challenges.

The Black Volta River is known for its unpredictable tides and varying depths, complicating rescue efforts and raising fears that the missing students may have drowned.

The community and school officials are in mourning, and the tragedy has attracted national attention. The Ghana Education Service alongside other relevant agencies is expected to release official statements and provide updates as the search continues.
