School owner arrested for allegedly stopping BECE candidate from writing mathematics paper over unpaid fees

Proprietor Arrested for Denying BECE Candidates Access to Exam Over Unpaid Fees.

The proprietor of Big Six Educational Complex in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Afoakwa Sarpong, has been arrested by the Mamponteng District Police for allegedly detaining two Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates, preventing them from sitting for the Mathematics paper on June 16, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the police, the incident occurred when the two students were allegedly confined by the school authority due to their failure to settle outstanding registration fees. As a result, the students were unable to take part in one of the most critical subjects in the national examination.

The police described the act as one of "assault by imprisonment," prompting swift intervention following a formal complaint filed by the Kwabre East Municipal Director of Education, Nana Adu Mensah Asare. He was accompanied by Mavis Okyere Anane, the Public Relations Officer of the Municipal Education Directorate.

“The arrest is linked to a disturbing event during the just-ended BECE, in which Mr. Sarpong is alleged to have unlawfully barred two Junior High School candidates from participating in the Mathematics paper due to unpaid registration fees,” the official police release stated.

Investigations into the matter are currently underway to establish the full facts and determine the appropriate legal action. The development has drawn criticism from education stakeholders and the general public, who view the incident as a violation of the children’s right to education.

While the Ghana Education Service (GES) has not yet released an official statement, there is growing concern over the need to safeguard access to basic education, especially during critical national assessments. Many are calling for stronger oversight of private educational institutions to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The arrest serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities school authorities hold in ensuring that no student is denied the opportunity to learn or be assessed, regardless of financial constraints.
