Over 600,000 Candidates Set to Write 2025 BECE Starting June 11 — WAEC Outlines Key Guidelines.
More than 600,000 candidates are expected to take part in the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which will run from Wednesday, June 11 to Wednesday, June 18, 2025, according to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).In a press release issued on Monday, June 9, WAEC revealed that 603,328 school candidates—comprising 297,250 boys and 306,078 girls from 20,395 schools—have registered for this year’s exam. This marks a 5.99% increase from last year’s total of 569,236 candidates.
In addition to school candidates, 1,661 private candidates—858 males and 803 females—have also registered to sit for the exam this year. This figure represents a 19.49% increase over the 2024 number of 1,390.
The examination for school candidates will be conducted at 2,237 centres nationwide, while private candidates will write at 15 centres, mostly located in regional capitals. WAEC indicated that school candidates and some private candidates will be assessed using the current curriculum, while others will take the exam based on the old syllabus.
WAEC further announced that this year will be the final time private candidates will be examined under the old syllabus.
The Council assured that provisions have been made for candidates with special educational needs to participate fully in the exam. “We want to reassure parents, guardians, and school heads that all necessary steps have been taken to include every candidate in this year’s BECE,” the statement read.
WAEC also reminded the public about the revised regulations on examination malpractice, which have been effective since 2023. These rules address issues such as writing on the body or clothing, posting exam content online, obstructing access to school premises, misconduct by officials, and the double registration of candidates.
The Council encouraged school heads, supervisors, and invigilators to strictly enforce these regulations, which are available on WAEC’s official website.
Finally, WAEC appealed to all stakeholders to ensure that the exams are conducted in a calm and orderly atmosphere. “We urge everyone involved to help maintain discipline and order throughout the exam period,” the statement concluded. WAEC also wished all candidates the best and reminded them to follow the rules carefully, warning that any violations would attract serious consequences.
