Mahama Promises Two New Universities for Bono East During “Thank You” Tour.

During a regional tour to express appreciation for support in the 2024 general elections, President John Dramani Mahama announced the establishment of two new universities in the Bono East Region.

The initiative, he said, aims to tackle youth unemployment and bridge the skills gap through improved access to higher education.

While addressing a gathering in Techiman, Mahama reiterated his government’s focus on equitable development under the “Big Push” agenda. He disclosed that a Technical University would be set up in Techiman, with land already allocated at Oforikrom through collaboration with regional authorities. Additionally, a University of Health and Life Sciences is planned for Kintampo.

“Technical education is vital to our economic transformation,” the President noted. “We’re taking concrete steps to empower the youth with employable skills.”

He also outlined plans to absorb first-year tertiary tuition fees and complete all abandoned Community Day Senior High School projects as part of a broader inclusive education strategy.

Improving Roads and Stabilising the Economy

Mahama pointed to progress in stabilising the national currency, indicating that the cedi was regaining strength and inflation was easing. “People are starting to notice gradual relief at the market,” he told residents in Kintampo.

He pledged to boost road infrastructure in Bono East, with priority projects including the Asueyi–Mesidan, Offuman–Wenchi, Sunyani–Nkoranza, Techiman–Kintampo, and Atebubu–Kajaji roads. These routes, according to Mahama, are crucial for agricultural and commercial transport and will significantly reduce travel time and costs for locals.

In a major announcement for Techiman, the President revealed that a 54-kilometre outer ring road would be constructed to ease traffic congestion. Preliminary engineering and design work has already begun, he said, led by the Department of Urban Roads.

“My visit is not just to say thank you, it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to development, inclusivity, and results-driven leadership,” Mahama concluded.
