The National Labour Commission (NLC) has obtained an interlocutory injunction from the Accra High Court to stop the strike action initiated by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

This legal move follows the association’s refusal to comply with the NLC’s directive to call off the strike.

The strike began on June 4, 2025, and has caused serious disruptions to healthcare services across the country. Nurses and midwives are demanding the implementation of the 2024 Collective Agreement, which has yet to be put into effect. The failure to enforce this agreement has fueled tensions, prompting the industrial action.

The injunction legally restrains the GRNMA from continuing the strike while further negotiations take place. The court order underscores the need for adherence to due process in resolving labour disputes, especially in critical sectors like healthcare where public welfare is at stake.

In addition, four other unions involved in the health sector have raised concerns about the GRNMA’s decision to proceed with the strike independently. These unions explained that during a joint meeting held on May 27, 2025, all parties agreed to postpone any industrial action to allow for further consultations. They also scheduled a meeting with the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to discuss the issues. The GRNMA’s unilateral move to resume the strike has therefore been described as premature and against the spirit of collective bargaining.

The prolonged strike has had a severe impact on healthcare delivery, with many hospitals and clinics struggling to provide essential services to patients. Authorities are calling for an urgent resolution to the dispute to prevent further harm to the public health system.

The NLC continues to urge all parties to engage in constructive dialogue to reach a sustainable agreement that respects the rights of workers while ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services.
