Government Allocates GH¢40 Million for Development of Young Public Universities – Haruna Iddrisu
As the nation intensifies efforts to advance its higher education system, the government has set aside GH¢40 million as seed funding aimed at fostering the growth and development of four newly established public universities.This significant financial commitment seeks to strengthen institutional capacity, improve physical infrastructure, and elevate research initiatives, thereby positioning these universities to better serve the country’s evolving academic and economic needs.
By allocating such resources early during their development, the government hopes to accelerate these institutions’ progress toward becoming centers of excellence, capable of producing highly skilled graduates to meet national and global challenges.
Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, made the announcement during the 5th Congregation Ceremony held at the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS). He explained that the funding will be disbursed through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and forms part of the 2025 national budget.
The beneficiary institutions include:
•C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS)
•University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR)
•University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS)
•S.D. Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SD-UBIDS)
Each university is set to receive GH¢10 million to support the expansion of facilities, bolster research capacity, and improve the overall academic environment. The initiative seeks to broaden access to quality tertiary education and build a skilled workforce to drive development across key sectors of the economy.
Minister Iddrisu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to equipping young public universities with the necessary resources to deliver relevant, high-quality education aligned with national development priorities. He noted that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening tertiary education as a critical foundation for economic transformation.
