GNAT Marks GES@50 with Stronger Commitment to Teacher Welfare and Growth
GNAT Celebrates GES@50 with Renewed Focus on Teacher Welfare and Development.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Ghana Education Service (GES) with a national delegates' conference held in Accra. The event served both as a celebration of GES’s five decades of educational service and an opportunity for GNAT to reemphasize its commitment to teacher welfare and professional growth.
The conference highlighted GNAT’s long-standing efforts to enhance education through consistent support for teachers. The association has introduced a number of initiatives aimed at improving the health, training, and financial wellbeing of its members across the country. These include access to free cancer treatment, improved training schemes, and expanded financial assistance options.
Speaking at the event, Christian Yaw Adinkra, Chairman of the GNAT Madina Adenta Abokobi District, revealed a partnership with the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre (SGMC) that offers free cancer care for teachers, their spouses, and two children under 18 years. Retired teachers from 2022 onwards are also eligible for this benefit with a small GH¢5 contribution.
Mr. Adinkra added that GNAT remains committed to supporting teachers with financial solutions, noting that the Teachers’ Fund continues to provide personal, vehicle, and housing loans. He also mentioned the introduction of the GNAT Provident Fund, which seeks to reduce the tax burden on teachers while boosting their overall welfare.
To support career advancement, GNAT has established the Institute for Industrial Relations to provide additional training. In terms of wellbeing, members now benefit from support policies such as the GNAT Heritage Cashback Plan and the “My Life” insurance package, which offer assistance in times of need.
Mr. Adinkra also expressed concern about declining student discipline, which he attributed in part to excessive focus on children’s rights that limits teachers’ authority in the classroom. He stressed the importance of corrective discipline carried out with compassion, warning that ignoring this balance could have serious consequences for society.
Through these efforts, GNAT reaffirmed its role not only as an advocate for teachers but also as a key contributor to the progress of education in the country.
