GES and NTC Begin Nationwide Training to Enhance Skills of Non-Professional Teachers.

GES and NTC Launch Nationwide Training to Upgrade Skills of Non-Professional Teachers.

The Ghana Education Service (GES), in collaboration with the National Teaching Council (NTC), has launched a comprehensive initiative aimed at enhancing the competence of approximately 30,000 non-professional teachers across the country.

This large-scale intervention is designed to equip these teachers with essential skills and qualifications that align with national standards, ultimately strengthening the quality of instruction in Ghana’s schools.

The initiative offers two tailored training pathways to address the diverse academic backgrounds of participants. Degree holders will undergo a 16-week Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) program, delivered through accredited teacher education universities. Non-degree holders, on the other hand, will participate in a one-week intensive training program hosted in selected institutions. Each pathway has been structured to ensure participants acquire relevant pedagogical knowledge and professional competencies required in the classroom.

This initiative is grounded in the provisions of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (Act 1023), which mandates teacher registration and licensing. The NTC has reiterated the importance of this regulatory framework, noting that teachers without formal training must now be certified to continue in the profession. By participating in this program, non-professional teachers will not only meet legal requirements but also enhance their effectiveness and confidence in the teaching profession.

The anticipated outcomes of the training are far-reaching. Beyond improving classroom instruction, the program is expected to contribute to better student learning outcomes and a more capable national workforce. The NTC’s collaboration with universities and other institutions underscores its commitment to professionalising the teaching workforce and ensuring sustained improvements in the education sector.

This initiative marks a pivotal moment in Ghana’s educational development agenda. By creating clear pathways for teacher qualification and licensing, the government is reaffirming its dedication to raising education standards nationwide. The long-term benefits of this program are expected to resonate well beyond the classroom, laying the foundation for a more knowledgeable and skilled population.
