In a decisive move toward the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) future leadership, former Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially declared his intention to contest the party’s flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Dr. Adutwum made the announcement on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, just a day after the party formally scheduled its presidential primaries for January 31, 2026. His entry into the race signals the beginning of what is expected to be a fiercely contested internal election within the NPP as the party prepares to reposition itself for a comeback in national leadership.

Addressing party supporters, stakeholders, and the media, Dr. Adutwum emphasized unity, discipline, and innovation as key pillars of his leadership vision. He expressed a firm commitment to rallying the grassroots and bridging internal divisions, stating that the strength of the NPP lies in its ability to stand together under a common purpose.

“With humility and a deep sense of responsibility, I declare my intention to lead our great party into the 2028 general elections,” Dr. Adutwum said. “I have served this party and this nation with diligence, integrity, and vision. If given the opportunity, I will carry that same energy into building a stronger and more united NPP that is ready to serve the aspirations of all Ghanaians.”

Drawing on his extensive background in education reform and public service, he positioned himself as a candidate with proven results and the capacity to lead the party into a new era of transformational leadership. He also promised to prioritize policies that address youth development, job creation, educational equity, and economic resilience.

Dr. Adutwum’s declaration has sparked discussions within political circles, with many viewing him as a formidable contender whose experience in governance and policy implementation could appeal to both party delegates and the broader electorate.

As the NPP gears up for its upcoming primaries, attention will now turn to how other aspirants respond to Dr. Adutwum’s entry and how his campaign strategy evolves over the coming months.
