Don’t hesitate to dismiss students who flout discipline – Education Minister tells school authorities.
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has charged heads of schools across the country to enforce the Ghana Education Service’s disciplinary guidelines without hesitation, even if it means dismissing students who violate them.
Speaking at the Jubilee House during a mid-year review of government interventions and education sector performance, Mr. Iddrisu expressed deep concern over the growing disregard for discipline in some second-cycle institutions. His remarks come in the wake of troubling incidents, including the shooting of a student at SDA Senior High School in Kumasi.
“The government will not compromise on academic excellence and the moral training of our students,” he stated. According to the Minister, the current administration under President John Dramani Mahama has granted the GES full authority to apply sanctions, including dismissals, where students show blatant misconduct.
Mr. Iddrisu contrasted this approach with previous administrations, indicating that the current government is not only focused on expanding access to education but also on instilling values that reflect national standards of behaviour and civility.
He further addressed other disturbing incidents during the just-ended BECE, highlighting the case of a student who died from complications related to sickle cell anaemia during the examination period, and another who was denied entry to the exam hall after arriving late due to a motor accident.
The Minister described these situations as tragic but avoidable, and emphasized that no student’s academic journey should end because of unfortunate circumstances. He assured that his Ministry is working with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the Ghana Education Service to explore remedial measures for students affected by such events.
Referencing the recent case in Sagnarigu, Mr. Iddrisu disclosed that he had personally engaged WAEC officials and obtained a comprehensive list of the students who were unable to sit for the exams. He pledged that their cases would receive the Ministry’s urgent attention.
“We will not abandon these young ones to the streets. Education is their path to a better future, and we intend to protect that,” he concluded.
