36 Prison Inmates Participate in BECE 2025; 2 Candidates Pass Away, 16 Invigilators Arrested Including 2 Headteachers.

The 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is currently underway across Ghana, with some remarkable and unfortunate events unfolding.

Prison Inmates Sit for BECE Nationwide

This year, 36 male inmates from various Ghanaian correctional facilities are registered to write the BECE. The breakdown includes:

•18 juveniles from the Senior Correctional Centre

•7 inmates from Nsawam Medium Security Prison

•6 inmates from Ho Central Prison

•5 inmates from Kumasi Central Prison

According to Chief Superintendent Adamu Abdul Latif, spokesperson for the Ghana Prisons Service, these inmates have been thoroughly prepared by professional teachers from both the Prisons Service and the Ghana Education Service. They take their exams at centres located close to their facilities and are escorted securely to and from the venues.

Since introducing formal education programs for inmates in 2007, the Prisons Service has maintained an impressive 100% pass rate among its inmate candidates.

Exam Malpractice: More Officials Arrested

Exam integrity remains a critical issue, as WAEC has apprehended 16 additional officials linked to cheating, raising the total arrests to 25 within a few days. Those detained include two headteachers found distributing unauthorized exam materials, one supervisor, and several invigilators. The arrests span regions including Bono East, Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern Regions. WAEC confirms that two suspects have fled while the rest await prosecution.

Tragedy During the Exams

Two BECE candidates have sadly died during the exam period. One is a 14-year-old girl from Kwahu Praso in the Eastern Region, and the other is a candidate from Assin Amoakrom in the Central Region. Investigations into the causes of death are ongoing.

While the participation of prison inmates in the BECE demonstrates commendable rehabilitation efforts, the recent deaths of candidates and the ongoing malpractice cases underscore the need for continued vigilance to protect the welfare of students and the credibility of the examination.
