The Real Reasons Behind Chairman Wontumi’s Arrest

Why Chairman Wontumi Was Arrested: Full Breakdown of Allegations and Investigations

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has found himself at the center of a major investigation involving key national security agencies

Speaking on Asempa FM's "Ekosii Sen" on Monday, May 26, 2025, Abass Nurudeen, the Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), detailed the serious allegations prompting the recent security actions against the political figure.

Allegations Leading to the Arrest

According to Nurudeen, the actions taken by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), National Security, and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) were not politically motivated but rooted in credible accusations of misconduct, including:

1. Misuse of Public Funds

Chairman Wontumi is alleged to have misappropriated funds earmarked for developmental projects in the Ashanti Region. Complaints suggest these resources may have been diverted for personal gain or shared among close associates.

2. Illegal Land Transactions

He is also accused of exploiting his influence to carry out unauthorized land acquisitions and property deals. These alleged activities sometimes resulted in the displacement of vulnerable communities, raising concerns of exploitation and fraud.

3. Political Intimidation

Nurudeen claimed that Wontumi used his political position to silence critics, intimidate local authorities, and suppress opposition. This, he said, has created a culture of fear and weakened transparency within the region.

4. Suspicious Party Financing

Another area of interest for investigators is his role in financing political activities. There are indications that campaign contributions may have originated from questionable sources, possibly violating electoral regulations.

The Role of National Security Agencies

The decision to search, invite, and eventually arrest Wontumi was reportedly based on intelligence gathered from whistleblowers and ongoing local investigations. Nurudeen stressed that:

•The action was based on verified intelligence, not politics.

•It forms part of broader efforts to promote transparency and accountability.

•No political figure should be exempt from investigation if wrongdoing is suspected.

He also warned against attempts to frame the situation as a political attack, urging Ghanaians to focus instead on the importance of justice and good governance.

EOCO’s Involvement

After being released by National Security on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Chairman Wontumi was immediately re-arrested by EOCO for further questioning. This move signals the seriousness of the allegations and the likelihood of more in-depth investigations in the coming days.

In closing, Abass Nurudeen emphasized that no individual, no matter their political power, should be shielded from accountability. He urged the public to support the rule of law and reject narratives that distract from the core issue: fighting corruption and abuse of office at all levels.
