TEWU Sets End-of-May Deadline for FWSC to Finalize Conditions of Service.
TEWU Gives FWSC End-of-May Deadline to Finalise Conditions of Service.
The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) has issued a firm ultimatum to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), demanding the immediate conclusion and signing of Conditions of Service agreements for its members by May 31, 2025.In a letter dated May 26, addressed to the Chief Executive of FWSC, TEWU expressed deep frustration over the continuous delays in concluding negotiations for non-teaching staff in institutions such as the Ghana Education Service (GES), public and technical universities, the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and the Ghana Library Authority.
According to the union, the stalled process has led to significant inequalities in allowances and other benefits. TEWU pointed to the recent increase in the Professional Development Allowance for GES teaching staff from GH¢1,200 to GH¢2,400—an increment that non-teaching staff have not received due to the pending agreement.
The letter also cited disparities in other public institutions, noting that senior staff and management of universities have received utility and vehicle maintenance allowances after signing their Conditions of Service, while TEWU members have been excluded from similar benefits.
“These delays have left our members at a clear disadvantage and caused widespread agitation,” the union stated. “After months of restraint, leadership can no longer contain the growing unrest among members.”
The union warned that if FWSC does not act by the end of May, it will be “compelled to advise ourselves,” suggesting potential industrial action or other serious measures.
The union concluded its statement by reaffirming its guiding principles of “Truth, Enlightenment, Wisdom and Unity,” and called on the Commission to act swiftly in the interest of fairness and harmony within the sector.
As of now, the FWSC has not responded to the ultimatum.
