New Allowance Rates for Senior Staff of Public Universities – Effective November 2024.
In a significant step toward improving conditions of service for university staff, the Senior Staff Association, University of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Technical University Administrators’ Association of Ghana (TUAAG) have agreed on a new set of allowance rates.
These allowances, effective from 1st November 2024, apply to eligible senior staff across various public universities. The updated rates are aimed at ensuring fair compensation for additional duties, transfers, accommodation, and work-related travel.
Here is a summary of the approved allowances.

Kilometric Allowance
- GH₵3.50 per km for car users
- GH₵1.40 per km for motorcycle users

Additional Duty – Existing rates will continue to apply.

Off-Campus Allowance – Existing rates to remain in use.

Vehicle Maintenance – No change; existing rates still apply.

Night / Out of Station Allowance – Based on existing institutional rates.

Owner Occupier Allowance – 25% of monthly basic salary (per university housing policy).

Rent Allowance – 20% of monthly basic salary (also guided by housing policy).

Tools Allowance – GH₵7.00 per day.

Travelling Expenses – Based on 7 tonnes at prevailing STC rates or by a transport company approved by the government.

Height / Depth Allowance
- 30–40 metres: GH₵2.80 per day
- 41–60 metres: GH₵4.20 per day
- 61–85 metres: GH₵5.00 per day
- Additional 10 metres: GH₵2.80 per day

Permanent Transfer Allowance – Three months' basic salary.

Temporary Transfer Allowance – Hotel accommodation for three months plus 20% of monthly basic salary for the same period.

Day Trip Allowance – GH₵145 per day.

Salary Advance – Up to three months’ basic salary, depending on availability of funds.

Warm Clothing Allowance – As per government-approved rates.

Funeral Grant – Existing rates apply.

Acting Allowance – The higher of:
- The difference between acting officer’s salary and minimum salary for the post, or
- 20% of monthly basic salary.

Non-Basic Allowance – 8% of monthly basic salary (applicable to all senior staff).

Sanitation and Security Allowance – GH₵300 per month.

Utility Allowance – GH₵400 per month (applicable to all senior staff).
These allowances are expected to ease the financial burden on senior staff and support them in executing their professional responsibilities effectively. Staff are encouraged to liaise with their HR departments for implementation details and eligibility clarification.
