PRETAG Issues Warning to Authorities Over Continued Student Attacks on Teachers

PRETAG Sounds Alarm Over Rising Student Violence, Calls for Urgent Action to Protect Teachers

The Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has expressed deep concern about the growing incidents of student violence in senior high schools. They warn that ongoing attacks on teachers threaten the unity and harmony of the teaching community.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, Mr. Kingsley Anyimadu, PRETAG’s Communication Director, described the student indiscipline as a serious crisis that demands immediate national attention.

Escalating Student Misconduct

Mr. Anyimadu explained that students are increasingly disrespectful and aggressive toward teachers. Reports of physical assaults, gang violence, theft, and even sexual abuse within schools have become disturbingly common.

He emphasized that these are not isolated events but part of a wider moral decline jeopardizing the safety and well-being of teachers nationwide.

Appeal for Inclusive Dialogue and Action

PRETAG is urging a collaborative approach involving the Ghana Education Service (GES), religious leaders, parents, community heads, and the media to restore discipline and respect in schools. Mr. Anyimadu stressed that reinforcing cultural and family values is essential to reversing this trend.

“We must all work together, parents, communities, institutions, to rebuild the values that are slipping away,” he said.

Parental Responsibility and Media Impact

The association partly attributes the problem to some parents’ failure to discipline their children, with many expecting teachers alone to handle moral guidance.

Mr. Anyimadu also pointed to the media’s role in promoting harmful content, such as shows glorifying sorcery, violence, and immoral behavior, which he believes contributes to students’ moral erosion.
