Government to Begin Military Training for 10,000 Service Personnel This August
National Service Authority to Launch Military Training for 10,000 Service Personnel in August
Starting August 3, 2025, the National Service Authority (NSA) will roll out a pilot military training exercise for 10,000 National Service Personnel as part of efforts to instill discipline and promote active citizenship among the youth.According to Felix Gyamfi, Acting Director-General of the NSA, this initiative is being introduced to equip young Ghanaians with the skills and mindset needed to address pressing national issues such as illegal mining, poor sanitation, and environmental damage. He explained that the training would also prepare participants for emergencies and other national duties.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ #GhanaConnect, Mr. Gyamfi emphasized that education alone is not enough to solve the country’s social challenges. He believes the physical and mental conditioning provided through military training will help shape a generation that is punctual, responsible, and ready to contribute meaningfully to national development.
The six-week program will be conducted in partnership with the Ghana Armed Forces and will be hosted at various military facilities across the country. This year’s exercise is voluntary, but interest is expected to be high. Participants will be selected from a broad range of sectors, including agriculture, health, and public safety.
Looking ahead, Mr. Gyamfi revealed that the training is expected to become a compulsory part of national service starting next year, likely integrated into the main service schedule. The mandatory model will ensure that every service person gains this foundational experience in discipline and civic responsibility.
He further explained that beyond just training, this initiative forms part of a broader national agenda to build a youth population that is not only academically prepared but also physically fit and emotionally ready to serve the nation in times of need.
“This is about building a strong, dependable future workforce that is alert, resilient, and responsive to the country’s developmental challenges,” he added.
Stakeholders believe that this program could transform the image and impact of national service by making it a more purposeful experience. If successful, it may open doors to other nation-building collaborations between state agencies and the youth.
