NAGRAT Warns: Teachers May Take Up Arms if Student Violence in Schools Continues

Teachers May Arm Themselves if Violence Persists – NAGRAT Issues Strong Warning

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has issued a serious warning, stating that teachers may begin arming themselves if attacks on them in schools persist.

The association says it will take action starting June 1, 2025, if the Ghana Education Service (GES) fails to address the growing safety concerns in schools.

NAGRAT President Angel Carbonu shared these concerns during an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, May 22. He expressed worry over the increasing violence against teachers and the need for urgent steps to ensure their safety.

“The first order of life is self-preservation. If someone can arm himself and harm me, I should be able to come to school armed,” he said.

Mr. Carbonu highlighted several incidents where teachers have been physically attacked or threatened by students, a situation he believes is being overlooked by both GES and the government.

“We will have to protect ourselves. We will have to make sure that no stupid student kills us in the line of our duty,” he added.

According to NAGRAT, the lack of serious response from authorities has left many teachers feeling vulnerable. The association believes that if proper action is not taken, the consequences could be severe.

NAGRAT has emphasized that this growing issue demands immediate attention from all educational authorities. The association made it clear that the continuous threats and violent acts against teachers can no longer be ignored. If the situation is allowed to persist without intervention, NAGRAT has warned it will not hesitate to take matters into its own hands. Their message is a strong reminder that teacher safety must be treated as a national priority, not an afterthought.
