NAGRAT Calls for Strict Enforcement of Discipline in Schools
NAGRAT Pushes for Firm Disciplinary Action in SchoolsThe National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to swiftly implement strong disciplinary policies in response to rising incidents of violence and misconduct in schools.
The union has set a deadline of May 31, 2025, for GES to introduce stringent measures to curb the growing threats faced by teachers. NAGRAT warned that failure to act will compel the association to take decisive steps to safeguard its members.
In a statement, NAGRAT highlighted troubling reports of students attacking teachers and bringing weapons such as machetes and firearms into schools. The group noted that the learning environment is becoming increasingly dangerous for both teachers and committed students.
Examples cited included Mr. Walter Yesotor Adanunyo of Christian Methodist High School, who was physically attacked for stopping students from cheating during an exam, and Mr. Ebenezer Kateya of Accra High School, who suffered assault while enforcing school dress code rules. The association also referenced a disturbing incident at OKESS where a student was caught with a gun.
NAGRAT identified several root causes of the crisis:
•Enrollment of students who failed the BECE
•Political interference in enforcing discipline
•Restrictions on schools repeating academically weak students
•Delays in removing disruptive students from school
“The situation is spiraling out of control. If nothing is done, we may soon be hearing of fatalities, sexual violence, and severe assaults in our schools,” the statement cautioned.
To address the crisis, NAGRAT’s National Council is urging GES to implement the following:
1. A public declaration by the GES Director-General empowering heads of schools to instantly dismiss any student who assaults staff.
2. Immediate expulsion for students found carrying weapons.
3. Permission for school authorities to repeat failing students without requiring external approval.
NAGRAT has made it clear that it expects GES to take action by the end of May. If the demands are ignored, the union is prepared to respond in defense of teachers' safety.
