Minister of Communication Assures Ghanaians of Data Reduction by Year-End
Ghanaians Must Trust the Process; Data Prices Will Drop by Year-End – Sam George. The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has reassured Ghanaians that internet data prices are expected to fall before the end of 2025.
He called on the public to remain patient as the government rolls out a strategic plan to address the high cost of data.
Speaking at the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day event on Monday, May 19, Minister George addressed the growing frustration expressed by many Ghanaians on social media over the rising prices of internet services.
The Minister has come under pressure, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where users have demanded immediate action to remove tariffs believed to be responsible for pushing data costs up by more than 39%. In response, Mr. George said, “My promise was that by the end of this year, we will see prices drop—and that promise still stands. I urge everyone to trust the process.”
While empathizing with the public’s concerns, the Minister explained that the solution requires a deliberate and systematic approach rather than a quick or sudden fix.
He revealed that a committee he formed to investigate the issue has already completed its work ahead of schedule. “I set up a committee tasked with developing a roadmap to reduce data prices within 14 days. They completed their work in 13 days,” he said.
According to Minister George, the current problems with data pricing in Ghana are the result of market distortions that have accumulated over the past eight years. “We are dealing with eight years of market distortion. Although I wish I could resolve the issue immediately, it demands a carefully calculated effort,” he added.
The Minister assured the public that the roadmap is now being implemented and encouraged Ghanaians to be patient as progress is made towards more affordable data.
