President John Dramani Mahama has officially nominated two new Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs) for the Central Region, pending formal approval by their respective Assemblies. This move is part of the ongoing efforts to reinforce local governance structures and improve administrative efficiency at the municipal level.

The nominations were made in line with Article 243(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 20(1) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended, which provide the legal basis for appointing MCEs in Ghana’s decentralized governance system.

In a statement released on Wednesday, May 28, by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, the President’s nominees were named as Reverend Atta Mensah for the Effutu Municipal Assembly and Gariba Adam for the Assin Central Municipal Assembly.

The statement, which was signed by Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, emphasized that these appointments will only take full effect once the nominees have been approved by the members of their respective Assemblies. This approval process is a critical component of local governance, ensuring that municipal leadership has the confidence and support of Assembly members who represent their communities.

Once approved, these new Municipal Chief Executives will be responsible for coordinating development projects, managing local government affairs, and promoting policies that enhance the social and economic wellbeing of their municipalities. The nominations mark an important step in President Mahama’s broader agenda to deepen decentralization and strengthen grassroots participation in governance.

The Ministry’s statement also underlined the importance of this nomination process as a transparent and democratic procedure, reflecting the government’s commitment to good governance and effective local administration.

Following the nomination, Assembly members in both Effutu and Assin Central will convene to discuss and vote on the confirmation of the President’s nominees. This will set in motion the next phase of local government leadership, with the expectation that the new MCEs will work closely with their teams to drive development initiatives that respond to the needs of their communities.
